ChatGPT is OpenAI’s conversational product for asking questions, creating things and completing work with models and tools.

1 · What it is

ChatGPT is a product, not one model. OpenAI adds newer models to it and retires older ones over time. The conversation is the control surface: you give it a goal, add useful material and refine the result through follow-up requests.

Depending on the request and the available features, it may answer with generated text or call a tool such as web search. The important distinction is whether the answer came only from the model or from fresh information supplied by a tool.

A search-backed answer may include citations, but OpenAI still advises checking whether those sources support the response. Treat the output as work to inspect, not a verdict.

2 · Why it exists

A chat box is simple; the system behind it has three important limits.

  • A confident answer is not proof that the answer is correct.
  • A linked source can itself be stale or mistaken, so open it and check it backs the answer.
  • Opting out of training leaves your chat history where it is; that is a separate choice.
  • The written log of a voice chat is a rough record, not a word-for-word copy.
